Casting Part UNO

Missing steps:

(camera had a malfunction)

1. Build a wall using MDF and seal the edges with clay. Box approx the size of the object you want to cast.

2. Build a base using clay and place object half in clay half not.

3. Make sure all gaps are gone!

4. Mix up plaster.

5. Scoop plaster in a sweeping pattern to make sure no air bubbles are in, and then pore in the rest.

6. If any is left over ask others if they need any!

7. Leave to dry (till warm or pref 24hrs)

8. Remove sides and clay

9. Remove objects (if they will come out!)

10. Volla! Both sides

Arte Povera

The term Arte Povera was introduced by the Italian art critic and curator, Germano Celant, in 1967. His pioneering texts and a series of key exhibitions provided a collective identity for a number of young Italian artists based in Turin, Milan, Genoa and Rome. Arte Povera emerged from within a network of urban cultural activity in these cities, as the Italian economic miracle of the immediate post-war years collapsed into a chaos of economic and political instability. The name means literally 'poor art' but the word poor here refers to the movement's signature exploration of a wide range of materials beyond the quasi-precious traditional ones of oil paint on canvas, or bronze, or carved marble. Arte Povera therefore denotes not an impoverished art, but an art made without restraints, a laboratory situation in which any theoretical basis was rejected in favour of a complete openness towards materials and processes. Leading artists were Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Piero Gilardi, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Marisa Merz,Giulio Paolini, Pino Pascali, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Emilio Prini and Gilberto Zorio. The heyday of the movement was from 1967–1972, but its influence on later art has been enduring. Can also be seen as Italian contribution to Conceptual art.

Treasure:

1.	wealth or riches stored or accumulated, esp. in the form of precious metals, money, jewels, or plate.

2.	wealth, rich materials, or valuable things.

3.	any thing or person greatly valued or highly prized: This book was his chief treasure.

Both encourage hoarders and people become overly obsessive about both.

For palmsest, I wanted to look at backs of heads (hair) becuse your hair is constantly renewing, and we spend a fortune looking after it even though we dont have to.

hair has alot to do with identity.

Girls especlly cover over there natural haircoulour and change there hair constantly.

Change of hair, change of lifestyle/culture/identity.

Shoes are similar in this respect.

Bought for £50 dragged through shit, you leave your mark on them then replace them. A constant loop.

This was the set up in "the cupboard" so all the shops were similar.

Ben, Charlie and me went to see this again.

I still love the use of repitition, and similar objects or themes.

The space is wonderfull also, it holds onto the classic galley theme of 3 large spaces and the rest small, but also makes use of hallways and entrances witout making it feel cluttered.

Also the building holds onto its past and it still has a church hall feel, and is worn away in areas making the buildings details as interesting as the pieces themselves.

I would say the only down point is the slightly over lurky staff whome follow you about.

The pillowcase is finished!

I chose a pillowcase because its an old one I have slept on since I was at college dreaming of getting into artschool back in 2006.

It has all the stains of red hairdye and carrys alot of history.

Now im somewhere I am happy and want to pass the pillowcase over to new meaning and ideas.

I wanted to commemorate the fact the course is getting shut down, and an obvious thing to do (especily with the 11th/11th coming up) with war memorials and death lists was to write the names of all the first and second years.

The last of what I feel is a dying breed.

The names are overlapped making it difficult to read, the first years overlapping the second.

All the colours look like its already fading.

It looks like it has been changed by many generations, like the exhobition at the childhood meuseum (V+A).

I personlanly think it works realy well and enjoyed making it.

I want to embroider on a pillowcase the names of all the final FdA students.

Both first and second year

I didnt have an embroidery loop.

So I made one from a cheap Tupperware dish.

This had to be picked out.

Reason No 1 for having an loop!

I have embroidered on this dress because It was given to us (Bem, Charlie, Emma and myself) by some charitiy workers just outside archway station.

Charitie workers were doing a task of exchange, we gave them some sketches in exchange for the dress, they had been given the dress from a lady whom had exchanged it for some buttons. I like the fact the dress has its own throwaway feeling, and trying to change it from something with no known history to something precious and with meaning.

This was one of the first times we all sort f left the stuidio at the same time and were all getting to know one another. The dress was given at a cross point in time so I wanted to do something special and personal with it.

I was going to embroyder things we loved about London on it, but no one else seemed keen to add anything to it so I started with a knife and fork as the class only seemed at the time to gather and talk at lunchtimes (and I LOVE food).

Hand stitching seemed more personal and appropriate.

I have also used a coathanger from our still life project, renforcing my whole junk:treasure idea.

Its bloomin' excellent.

Craftwork, and the use of everyday materials, are central to Holstad's practice. Labour-intensive, often collaborative techniques such as sewing, knitting and crocheting feature strongly in his work, embodying his interest in the tactile object and its ability to convey sensuality and comfort while resisting the increasing 'virtuality' of contemporary life. Like the majority of his works, be they drawings, collages or soft, sculptural forms, The Brain Quilt is imbued with a distinctly personal aesthetic symptomatic of a close physical and emotional relationship with its maker. The coloured and colourless forms seem to suggest the vagaries of human memory, or the contrasting sentiments at play in one's mind.

In the last two decades of his life the Polish outsider Edmund Monsiel, an untreated schizophrenic, produced a body of exquisitely detailed drawings, often with messianic and religious inscriptions. Though he held down a job as a weighbridge operator after he became ill he avo!ded social contact and was obsessively religious. His artistic outpourings began with transcriptions of visual hallucinations of Christ and the Devil in 1943, before giving way to chaotic agglomerations of figures and faces that seem suggest the artist's struggle with forces that threaten to consume him entirely. Subsequently Monsiel developed a more rigidly defined and controlled image of a world minated by the human face. Characteristically, Monsiel's drawings reflected the deific world of his visions in which he was God's emissary, rather than the dingy reality the small room in which he lived, and thereby quieted the powerful forces of his fears. Control was achieved partly through the. annihilation of pictorial depth and its placement by his own marks. Despite their hieratical nature, Monsiel's pictures seem to throb with an innate life; his figures and disembodied physiognomies are elusive, ways suggesting nascent metamorphosis.

Use of writing in his works.

Often talks about his everyday-life, he works at Elbe-Werkstätten GmbH (an employment and rehabilitation centre in Hamburg, Germany for people with disabilities) and writes about it in most every piece of text (or letter as they are often refereed to).

Most letters are written to his mother but never make it to her, but into other peoples hands or left lying about.

His work looks almost organic.

Judith Scott is classed as outsider art as he was downs syndrome and deaf and had her own free flow way of creating works with wool, found objects and other yarns.

Christof Mascher was born in 1979 in Hannover, and lives and works in Braunschweig, Germany. In the past two years he has had solo museum shows at Galerie der Stadt Remscheid, and at the Museum for Modern Art, Goslar.

Mascher's paintings are residues from a subconscious process that guides his work. Heavily influenced by David Lynch's account of steering one's own dreams - "I like to plunge into a dream-world which I myself have created or discovered, a world I have sought out for myself" - Mascher is motivated by capturing or constructing such fantastical narratives in his paintings. As a self-proclaimed child of the 80s, certain iconography and inspiration arises from various characters such as Skeletor, Jabba the Hutt, and the Super Mario Bros. Interested in how fantasy allows the surreal to emerge into life, such creations are integrated into Mascher's pictures on horizontal layers that sweep through his works. This stage-setting is crucial, forcing the viewer to navigate and weave through the paintings as one would do in vintage video games, platforms that were ultimately built in 2D.

Yet Mascher's work can also be seen in the tradition of Northern European landscape painting. While one notices an appreciation of naïve art or the Primitive, it is clear that Friedrich's expansive vistas, the composed fantasy of Paul Klee, the hybrids and creations of Bosch, the clash of man and nature seen in Nolde, and the masking and huddling of figures employed by James Ensor, are all continuously present. This fusion of contemporary iconography with references to the past, aligned to the variation of materials he uses, allows for an individual kind of research where Mascher can develop what he calls his "secret knowledge". It is here where he finds a connection with Maya Deren's 1943 classic, 'Meshes of the Afternoon', and the energy it seeks to express, specifically in how it is "concerned with the interior experiences of an individual, recording an event which cannot be witnessed by other people."\

Arnulf Rainer, (born 8 December 1929 in Baden, Austria), is an Austrian painter and is internationally renowned for his abstract informal art.

In his early years, Rainer was influenced by Surrealism. In 1950, he founded the Hundsgruppe (dog group) together with Ernst Fuchs, Arik Brauer, and Josef Mikl. After 1954, Rainer's style evolved towards Destruction of Forms, with blackenings, overpaintings, and maskings of illustrations and photographs dominating his later work. He was close to the Vienna Actionism, featuring body art and painting under drug influence. He did a lot of work on Hiroshima, after the bombing.

I have decided to do my PPD on the Greenwich gem that is "the junk shop"
